Advocacy Efforts
NCATA has developed a number of position papers on issues affecting non-motorized roadway users in NC:
- Safe Passing: Bicyclists have less physical protection in a collision than many other drivers, such as automobile users, and are subject to frequent overtaking due to speed differences. A primary issue of concern to bicyclists is how they are affected by unsafe passing actions. NCATA Position Paper on Safer Passing (October 2011)
- Rumble Strips: State and local DOTs are adding rumble strips to more and more roads in the areas where cyclists often ride. NCATA Background paper on Rumble Strips (October 2011)
- Did you know that in North Carolina, if your traffic signal turns green and you proceed without looking, and then a person runs the red light and injures you, you may be completely barred from recovering any damages from them for your injuries?

Contributory Negligence (April 2010) - Demand-actuated traffic signals can easily be designed and/or adjusted to detect bicycles with metal wheels; in California, state law requires signals to detect bicycles. NCATA recommends that North Carolina adopt the same policies as California to avoid creating unacceptable delays and dangers for bicyclists at signalized intersections.
- Police officers who understand how best bicycle operating practices and NC's traffic laws work together to reduce crashes are more supportive of bicyclists' use of roadways and more effective at promoting public safety. NCATA encourages that all police officers in NC have access to a training program on bicyclist safety and law enforcement similar to the one provided to Raleigh Police and Cary Police.
